An ECG (electrocardiogram) records the movement of your heart at rest. It gives data about your pulse rate and heartbeat and shows if there is any change in the heart due to high blood pressure (hypertension) or proof of a past heart attack. However, it doesn’t indicate whether you have asymptomatic blockages in your heart arteries or predict your risk of a future heart attack. You may need to take an ECG test if you have risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, or symptoms such as palpitations or chest pain. Or then again you may require it in if you already have heart disease. But in other cases, you may think about having this test. Here’s the reason:
The test isn’t helpful in routine checkups for individuals who don’t have risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure or symptoms of heart disease, like chest pain. However, people with no risk elements or symptoms have an ECG as part of their routine checkups. There are better approaches to heart disease than routine ECGs. The ECG won’t harm you. It may sometimes show little nonspecific abnormalities that are not due to underlying heart disease, cause worry and lead to follow-up tests and treatments that you do not need.
